Right click on the text in the viewport and change the view to "User" this allows you to maneuver around the project better without requiring the "Pan" button.

If you are having trouble aligning objects together turn the "Snap Toggle" on and then right click on the button. Select "Endpoint" and "Midpoint" this will allow you to select the objects by the center or end of a line and place it onto another object by snapping it to the second objects line center or endpoint.

When creating objects give them a meaningful name. That way when you press "H" to select an object you won't end up with a list of twenty boxes or cylinders etc

If you create a rolling stock item and when you try to use it, it derails and moves across the ground then you have the attachment points around the wrong way. All attachment points should be added using the top view and they should be in the following order

a.limback

a.bog1

a.bog0

a.limfront

If the colors of the windows and menus etc in gmax are a little too dark then go to the "Customize" window and then select "Customize User Interface" Go to the "Colors" tab and select "Use Standard Windows Colors" from the "Scheme" drop down menu. Or alternatively you can specify your own colors.

If you want to move part of a layer select the portion you want to move and then hold down the Control button and you will be able to move the selected section independently of the rest of the layer.
